Kelham Heritage Month

What is Kelham Heritage Month?

Kelham Island and Neepsend has a unique collection of industrial buildings and other significant historical landmarks that tell the story of the area’s rich industrial past. It is part of what makes the neighbourhood so different and special. Whether it’s the magnificent old factory buildings such as Cornish Place or Brooklyn Works, now converted into homes, or the landmark sites such as The Chimney House, Kelham Island Brewery or Ball St bridge we’re sure everyone has their favourite building.

As part of the activities for developing a Neighbourhood Plan for the area, we want to ask everyone in the community to tell us which are their favourite building(s) or landmark(s). This can be any building or site you feel is significant to the heritage of Kelham & Neepsend, and somewhere you’d like to see protected for future generations.

The aim is to get as many people as possible involved in identifying the special buildings of Kelham and Neepsend as possible, to raise the awareness of the building heritage of the area and its importance in helping to maintain the special character of the neighbourhood.

Throughout the month of April we will be posting information on social media and via other means of communication to highlight some of the special sites in & around the area.

Kelham Heritage Month – How do I take part?

With limitations on social gatherings still in force, we are focusing our efforts on participation via social media.  All you need to do is go to Instagram or Twitter and head to the project’s specially dedicated accounts @kelham_neighbourhood (if you don’t have Instagram or Twitter already, it’s easy to download via your App Store) then follow the instructions on the account to nominate your favourite building or site in Kelham & Neepsend.

All you have to do is get out there, take a picture of your favourite building, post it with the hashtag #kelhamheritagemonth, and tag us so that we are notified of your nomination. That’s it!

Further information is available at https://www.facebook.com/kelhaminfo/ - the KINCA Facebook page. For those who don’t have access to social media, you are still able to participate. A form will be available to collect and complete from Kelham Deli, so pop along, pick one up and let us know which is your favourite building.

Once the month is over and we have had all your suggestions & nominations, KINNF will publish a list of the most popular sites.
